For my final project I would like to focus on a
group of students I am currently working with. This is for a class of adult learners studying web design.
The class consists of two 75hour segments. During this class which began in mid
September we are taking on a project to create a class website with resources
and examples. This would be a good fit to use Google tools to plan and share
our efforts.
It will include:
- Goals
- Resources
- Timeline
- Assessments
This course is being
taught with Long Island University School Of Continuing Studies. I will be able to provide assessment noting that this in an ongoing project it will extend
beyond the OCT course. We could report on work that is completed inline with
the end of this course.
This class project is in
addition to students regular class work where now they are applying in a team
different skills they learned and building on skills they have. Students are
members of the City of New York DC37 Employees Union.
I have discussed using online tools with student for this class to include building a WCMS, Moodle or Blogs to share information. It would be important that we use tools to enhance the face to face to include reading assignments, sharing documents, creating mockups, sharing tutorials. This project could keep students informed about class work, providing check list as we have in our class. Students are uploading lesson as they finish them and could report completion.
This would focus on two part for the class.
- Ongoing Assignments
- Class web portal rebuild
Sounds like a lot of great possibilities here for using Google Tools. Do you already have an LMS? Would this be a supplement? Or would you be using some Google Tools as part of the curriculum of web design. Do you currently use In Design or other tools? Google Sites is not the BEST tool for web design, but it might be an interesting challenge to have students create a visually appealing template for Google Site. Here is a community I started a while back that has some great ideas for design. I would encourage you to proceed with your idea and use the next few weeks to narrow down and create a focus. But lots of great ideas here. Please carry on.

Thanks Lucie, we will code the site to begin with using notepad then move to Adobe Dreamweaver, I do use In Design but not for this class. Students are creating mock up as sketches. Some have Illustrator and Photoshop skills and are able to provide wire frames and PS Comps. I think the Google Docs will provide a interactive tool for the class to participate in the new class site rebuild and as a way to check ongoing assignments. I will work on setting up this up. I do not expect to be using Google to build the websites but realize there is an option for Google sites which may be worth exploring at some level. Our students need to code, style, and integrate interactivity. For those that can I offer a database component running parallel. This is fun course to teach. I have been reluctant to create an online component as I want to make sure students attend in person. I think using Google Docs may provide a new level of interactivity to complement the face to face with like a partial flipped classroom.
